Take Action on Climate. Build with Wood.

Carbon capture and storage has become a major focus in climate conversations. Governments and industries are investing heavily in technologies designed to capture carbon and store it deep underground, often through costly, energy-intensive processes.

But there is another solution. One that is natural, proven, and already at work.

Trees.

Trees are carbon-based lifeforms that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow. Much of that carbon is stored in the wood itself, making forests one of the most effective carbon capture systems on the planet.

When that wood is used in construction, the benefits extend even further.

Wood buildings don’t just reduce emissions, they store carbon.

Wood is approximately 50% carbon by dry weight. When incorporated into buildings, that carbon remains stored for the life of the structure. At the same time, responsibly managed forests are replanted, continuing the cycle of carbon absorption.

This creates a powerful opportunity: to turn buildings into long-term carbon storage solutions.

Compared to other primary construction materials, wood also has a significantly lower environmental footprint. Manufacturing lumber requires far less energy than producing concrete or steel, resulting in lower embodied carbon.

In fact, substituting wood for concrete and steel in commercial construction can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 60%.

Even when accounting for harvesting, processing, and transportation, emissions associated with wood products are relatively low. In many cases, when sourced from sustainably managed forests with stable or increasing carbon stocks, wood products can achieve a net-negative carbon impact.

Forests and wood products are both part of the solution.

Carbon can be stored in living forests or in the built environment. The difference is that wood products allow us to meet real-world needs, while continuing to regenerate forests that absorb even more carbon over time.

Global experts, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, have identified key strategies for a low-carbon future. Among them:

  • Expanding forest growth and health
  • Increasing carbon stored in wood products
  • Using wood in place of more carbon-intensive materials

While harvesting trees does release some carbon initially, this is offset over time by new, fast-growing forests that actively absorb carbon dioxide. It’s a continuous, renewable cycle; one that aligns environmental responsibility with practical development.

The path forward is clear.

If we are serious about reducing emissions, we must also be strategic about the materials we use. Building with wood is not just a construction choice, it’s a climate action.
